Westfield River Symposium (March 29, 2003)

On March 29, WRWA will hold its Ninth Annual Westfield River Symposium at Westfield state College "A Look at the Future: Water Resources and Open Space". For more information, call WRWA at 532-7290 or 572-5304 or check out the

AMC Trail Maintenance Workshop (April 26-27, 2003):

Reconstruction of the Pot Rock Trail on the Little River at Noble View: Come give back to the trails that have given you so much. Here we will be rehabilitating a section of trail that is severely eroded, constructing appropriate drainage features and re-establishing the treadway. At the end of the trail discover the wonder of a large pothole about 8 feet in diameter and 20 feet deep left from the glacial age. Hard work, dirty hands and clothes and lots of fun will be mandatory. Bring a lunch, work clothes, long pants and sturdy shoes. For more information, contact the AMC Southern New England Trails Office @ 413-528-6333 or Noble View phone @ 413-572-4501 (no cost lodging offered to participants)

Aquifer Forum (May 9, 2003)

The Barnes Aquifer Protection Advisory Committee (BAPAC) will be hosting a public forum during Drinking Water Week on Friday evening, May 9th entitled Your Water Security: Managing Community Growth and Aquifer Protection. The event will be held in Easthampton at the White Brook Middle School at 7:00 PM. The purpose of the forum is to raise public awareness about the development pressure on the Barnes Aquifer and what responsible actions can be taken to protect it while supporting community growth. Contact Matt DelMonte at (413) 781-6045 for more details.

AMC Trail Adopter Workshop (May 17, 2003)

Come learn the ins and outs of being an AMC trail Adopter and adopt a Noble View or other trails by the end of the day. The Noble View Committee and AMCıs Regional Trails Coordinator are working together to encourage the long-term stewardship and maintenance of the Noble View hiking trails. This program is open to individuals, groups and families. Come with a lunch, work clothes, sturdy shoes and small daypack. We will be doing basic trail work including drainage construction techniques, pruning, treadway pitch and much more. Once an Adopter, you would be required to get out on your section of trail twice per year to clear the trail and check for problems, followed by a simple paper report. For more information contact the Southern New England Trails Office at 413-528-6333 @ or Noble View phone @ 413-572-4501 (no cost lodging offered to participants)

Richard Waite Remembered

WRWA received a gift of $1000 from the estate of Janet F. Waite, the widow of Richard Waite. Janet passed away last year and wanted to remember WRWA because of her husband's long and close association with us. As you may remember, Richard Waite served as Executive Director of WRWA in its early years and was named an Honorary Director for Life in April of 1978. Each year WRWA gives out the "Waite Award", named in honor of Dick Waite, to an outstanding environmentalist in our watershed.
